Memorial Groves
Memorial Groves is a transformative $42 million initiative within Memorial Park that will reimagine about 100 acres along West Memorial Loop Drive as a living memorial to the park’s World War I history and specifically the former Camp Logan training grounds, where more than 70,000 U.S. soldiers trained from 1917–1919. The design by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects centers on a forest of 2,000+ bald cypress trees planted in regimented grids to symbolize soldiers in formation, enhanced with interpretive exhibits, preserved archaeological remains, restored native savanna and prairie habitats, trails for walking and cycling, a playground, open lawns for picnicking, a visitor center, and new parking. Slated to begin construction in 2026 with completion targeted for 2027, the project is part of the Memorial Park Master Plan’s Ten-Year Plan and will deepen public understanding of why the park is called “Memorial” while adding engaging recreational and educational spaces just minutes from Camp Logan and the 77007 area.
